Someday- Is it Really Code for 'Never'?

I'm old. This confirms it. I was sitting enjoying conversation over coffee with one of my twenty- something friends. Casually, she used the word "someday" when speaking of plans she and her husband are making. Suddenly, it hit me that she has 15 more years of "somedays" than I do."Someday is a very dangerous word; it's codeword for never."  - Tom Cruise in  Knight and Day (Love this movie!)In a moment, a parade of "someday" plans and dreams of yesterday circled in my mind; a feeling of panic paralyzed me.  What if all of my somedays turn into nevers?  I'm not okay with that. I'm not okay with time simply slipping away unnoticed, taking my dreams with it.I'm not trying to be a downer, but reality tells me that time is not standing still while I try and decide if I will really use it or not. Someday has an expiration date.Life seems endless at times. This planet so comfortable, that we forget it's not our real home. Yet, as we talk of someday, time is ticking. This is not a drill. We all need conversations or circumstances that shake us out of our daze reminding us that these days, these breaths, these plans on this planet are not permanent. We are passing through, journeying on our way to Glory. Our lasting impact comes from how we live these days and breathe these breaths. We all need moments that speak into our haze of comfort demanding focus and clarity. Clarity that expose our ruts and apathy; cold water splashed in the face of our routine and indifference. We all need moments that question the direction, the trajectory of our present life.SomedayWe've all said it. It's the language of dreamers, but also of doubters. If we were sure and determined our someday would have a date, a deadline attached. Instead of "someday I will lose this weight", we would say, "today, I will make one change to begin a healthier lifestyle."  Instead of "someday I will get to know my neighbor and invite her to church", we would say, "today, I'm walking down to see my neighbor."What are your someday dreams that you truly desire to happen? Maybe your someday is something God has asked of you, and you're procrastinating. What are you waiting for? Without and end date, we can't afford to procrastinate, can we? This is coming from the queen of procrastination- I work great under pressure; I get it.Perhaps I should just live today as if it is the expiration date.Show me, LORD, my life's end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting my life is. - Psalm 39:4Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom. - Psalm 90:12 (NLT)As the Spirit of God leads us into moments when he teaches us the brevity of life, as he gives us clarity for our present life, what can we do to turn our somedays into reality?

  • Ask the Lord for confirmation; is this someday dream of Him?
  • Set a date. Just do it, By ____________ I will ____________...
  • Trust the Father with the strength and provisions required to carry out his dream in you, through you.

Do not be discouraged if you have gotten comfortable in this world. Do not feel like a failure if you find yourself in a rut, coasting in your own plans. Just stop and seek Jesus. Ask him to give you the focus and urgency to embrace his journey for you. Then put one foot in front of the other, moving forward as you abide in Him.The one who calls you is faithful, and He will do it. - 1 Thessalonians 5:24
