Love Song
Your alarm sounds, your eyes are heavy with sleep, your thoughts are not even stirring yet. Can you hear a sweet melody floating in the air above you? Can you feel it resting on you like a soft, weighty blanket?
Someone is singing over you a song of rejoicing. He is a Mighty Warrior, and He is so delighted with you that he wrote a love song for you. He sings his song of praise and honor over you because you are his beloved. He is enthralled with your beauty and calls you his masterpiece, his unique poem, his daughter.
His song began before your feet touched the floor, before your hands touched your laptop, the dishes, or even your children. His melody of delight filled the air before you filled your Stanley, your to-do list, or a house-full of hungry bellies. His lyrics were written before you made any hard decisions, amazing plans, or awful mistakes.
Can you hear his song? Can you feel his delight?
Maybe you are convinced if you could just get all those boxes checked on your habit tracker or somehow raise respectful, obedient children, He will sing louder. Or worse, maybe you believe that if you had not made that terrible mistake years ago, you would deserve his song of delight. Instead, you only hear lyrics of guilt and shame written by the enemy.
What if you have waited and worked so hard for years, desperate to get the attention and approval of your parents, or your spouse, or your church, or your platform, thinking that their delight in you would make you feel acceptable and worthy, that you couldn’t hear the love song of your Savior?
He loves you completely and perfectly. You are not ignored, neglected, or forgotten. He is not angry or disappointed in you. He sees you and accepts you right now, today, before you have a chance to do something amazing. He’s not looking for a beautiful performance, a clean house, obedient children, or a habit tracker full of checked boxes. He wants you. He delights in you.
Isn’t that our deepest desire, to be loved and cherished. Some of us can’t even imagine being delightful.
The God of the universe, the creator of every beautiful sunrise and sunset, the Mighty Warrior and Prince of Peace, your Savior, Jesus Christ, who willingly hung on a cross, feeling the weight of a world of sin and shame, cried out, “It is finished.” (John 19:20)
Now we have Christ in us, the hope of glory. (Colossians 1:27) There is no glory, or praise, or acceptance to be earned. Our lives and all the things we want to hide are hidden with Christ, in God. (Colossians 3:3)
The LORD, your God, is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.” Zephaniah 3:17
Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name. You are mine. Isaiah 43:1
For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:10
I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine. Song of Solomon 6:3
